THE BARR BROTHERS Tour With THE LOW ANTHEM

Our good friends, Brad and Andrew Barr, have just announced a new band -- The Barr Brothers -- along with a handful of dates debuting the project while opening for The Low Anthem...

THE BARR BROTHERS To Open For THE LOW ANTHEM

Guitarist BRAD BARR & Drummer ANDREW BARR Joined By Harpist SARAH PAGE Introduce A New Band With A Debut Studio Album In The Works

Brad and Andrew Barr, best known as founding members of revered rock bands The Slip and Surprise Me Mr. Davis, are adding a third act to their repertoire. In the long tradition of brothers who've assumed their surname as a moniker, The Barr Brothers introduce themselves with a string of West Coast and Canadian shows opening for The Low Anthem.

The seeds for The Barr Brothers were first sown five years ago when Brad and Andrew relocated to Montreal. Brad's apartment shared an adjoining wall with harpist Sarah Page. The two would hear each other practicing through the cracks. Sarah's gentle melodies began weaving their way into the music that Brad was writing. A friendship was struck and songs were born. This latest endeavor for Brad and Andrew finds them exploring sounds quieter and more ethereal than anything in their previous work. Final touches are currently being added to a debut recording that will be released later this year.

Brad and Andrew Barr remain equally committed to their other bands, as well. Plans will be announced in the coming weeks for Surprise Me Mr. Davis tour dates and EP release, while work is also underway on the next full-length studio album by The Slip.

Marco Benevento | Between The Needles & Nightfall | Due May 11 from RPF

MARCO BENEVENTO | 'BETWEEN THE NEEDLES & NIGHTFALL'
Available May 11 from Royal Potato Family

Back with his third full length studio album in as many years, Brooklyn-based pianist and sound sculptor MARCO BENEVENTO delivers BETWEEN THE NEEDLES & NIGHTFALL on May 11 via his label Royal Potato Family.

BETWEEN THE NEEDLES & NIGHTFALL was initially conceived at Trout Recording in Brooklyn, NY where engineer Bryce Goggin (Pavement, Akron/Family) tracked Marco Benevento and his trio, including bassist Reed Mathis and drummer Andrew Barr, over three days. The material was drawn from fragments of melodies and song ideas that Benevento had been collecting over the last year. To achieve the colors he envisioned for these compositions, Benevento recorded on a baby grand piano bolstered by guitar pick-ups, amplifiers and a myriad of pedals and circuit bent toys, while overdubbing Moog, Optigan, Mellotron and Farfisa. He then transferred the tracks to his home studio, taking the next two months to cut, loop and shape the pieces into full-fledged songs. As a last step, Benevento handed off his work to three of his favorite engineers: Mell Dettmer (Sunn O))), Eyvind Kang), Jesse Lauter (Low Anthem, Elvis Perkins) and Vid Cousins (Amon Tobin, Kid Koala) for final mixes. The results range from the day-glo electro-post-rock of "It Came From You" to the simply-stated lullaby "Twin Oaks" to the shimmering Arcade Fire-meets-Brad Mehldau anthem "Two Of You."

2009 was a breakout year for Marco Benevento. In February, he released Me Not Me, an album featuring interpretations of songs by My Morning Jacket, Leonard Cohen and Deerhoof among others. Touring it across the U.S., Benevento and his trio made a number of high profile performances, including San Francisco Jazz Festival, Earshot Festival and Carnegie Hall. At the end of '09, Benevento released his first ever DVD, Live In NYC: The Sullivan Hall Residency, a two hour-plus documentary with performances and interviews from his historical five week 2008 engagement at the downtown New York City venue Sullivan Hall, featuring special guests like Brad Barr, Kaki King, Billy Martin, Stanton Moore and Steven Bernstein. As if all this wasn't enough, he toured and recorded with post jazz cognoscenti Garage A Trois, became a full time member of indie pop experimentalists Surprise Me Mr. Davis and welcomed his second daughter into the world.

With the release of BETWEEN THE NEEDLES & NIGHTFALL Marco Benevento continues to define himself as one of the most prolific new voices of his era, blurring genres from song to song, and more often from measure to measure, with his own take on simple pop pleasures, dance party rave-ups and art jazz experimentation. He speaks in modern sonic tongues, all cut-and-pasted, tweaked-out and glitchy, but full of wide-eyed wonder that rejoices in the limitless horizons of sound and melody.

BETWEEN THE NEEDLES & NIGHTFALL track listing is:

1. Greenpoint
2. Between The Needles & Nightfall
3. Two Of You
4. Numbers
5. It Came From You
6. Ila Frost
7. RISD
8. You Know I'm No Good

Marco Benevento | February 2010 Tour Dates & New Album Plans

Hello Bus Riders, Real Morning Party People and Royal Potato Family--

We hope this finds you all doing well. Just a quick note here to bring you up to speed on what Marco Benevento has got in the works.

For the most part, the TRIO has been laying low as of late while Marco works on a brand new studio record. We'll be making an announcement about this next week, but for the time being we can tell you that Marco, Reed and Andrew spent a week at Bryce Goggin's studio Trout Recording in Brooklyn, NY laying down all sorts of 22nd century, multi-dimensional jams. These tracks were then taken back to Marco's basement where they are currently being sculpted into songs to be born to the world. Titled BETWEEN NEEDLES & NIGHTFALL, the album is tentatively pegged for a May 11 release through the Royal Potato Family.

And just as the final mixes are being tweaked by the amazing Mell Dettmer in Seattle, the TRIO with Dave Dreiwitz and Andrew Barr will take a four day run down the Eastern corridor. If you're in the vicinity, come on out and warm your bones with us!!!

MUSHROOM | Naked, Stoned & Stabbed (Available April 27)

MUSHROOM | 'Naked, Stoned, & Stabbed'
Available April 27 from 4 Zero/Royal Potato Family

"Mushroom have long been knights traversing the plains and mountains of psychedelic rock." (The Wire)

MUSHROOM, a musicians' collective based in the San Francisco Bay area, return with their first album in three years, NAKED, STONED, & STABBED, to be released April 27 through 4 Zero Records/Royal Potato Family. A new phase for Mushroom, the project was conceived as a cross-continental Cinema Verite travelogue of time and space. Acoustic, ambient and blending eastern and western hemispheres, its music floats on an ethereal blanket of sitar, violin, pump organ, celesta, vibraharp, dulcimer and flutophone, while African, Latin and Indian percussion replace a conventional drum set. Enigmatic song titles include "Celebration At Big Sur (The Sound Of The Gulls Outside Of Room 124)," "Though You're Where You Want To Be, You're Not Where You Belong," "Tariq Ali" and the only outside composition, a remake of the Syd Barrett/Kevin Ayers' collaboration, "Singing A Song In The Morning."

Recorded over a weekend at The Wally Sound in Oakland, CA, the sessions were both planned and spontaneous with producer and percussionist Pat Thomas often adding and subtracting instrumentalists on the fly. Configurations range from a duo to a trio to an octet, and thus give each song a varied approach. At the time of the recording, the band had just come off a multi-night run of performances interpreting Pete Townshend's 1971 rock opera Lifehouse. The vulnerable and dynamic music of that experience provided a catalyst that resulted in the album's final 13 tracks. Mushroom also cite influences like Sandy Bull, Alice Coltrane, Davy Graham, Brian Eno and Fela Kuti as having played a roll in the sounds found on Naked, Stoned, & Stabbed.

Mushroom first formed in the mid-'90s and have since amassed a 12-album discography. A loose and rotating cast of Bay area musicians, its members include guitarist/knob twiddler Josh Pollock (a member of Citay, and collaborator with Gong, Acid Mothers Temple, Ruins, John Cale, and Damo Suzuki), vintage keyboard guru Matt Cunitz (Brightblack Morning Light, Hiss Golden Messenger), multi-instrumentalist Erik Pearson (Daevid Allen, Irene Sazer, Crooked Jades, Billy Talbot/Crazy Horse), bassist Ned Doherty, drummer/bandleader Pat Thomas (renowned reissue producer of recordings by Judee Sill, Ruthann Friedman, Pearls Before Swine, Terry Reid, Cluster & Eno), and Mushroom's newest member, percussionist David Brandt (his adventures include a European tour with the Kologbo Afrobeat Academy [Oghene Kologbo was the guitarist in Fela Kuti's Africa 70 band], and performances with Conduction maestro Butch Morris' New York Skyscraper).

Marco Benevento, Marc Friedman & Stanton Moore: Outtake from "Live In NYC: The Sullivan Hall Residency" DVD

Here's more exclusive bonus footage (not available on the DVD) from Marco Benevento's new DVD release: Marco Benevento & Friends Live in NYC : The Sullivan Hall Residency

It's towards the very end of the set when Marco slams into a bluesy riff reminiscent of The Allman Brothers' "Southbound" with Stanton Moore of Galactic providing an appropriately southern and uptempo pocket. Marc Friedman steps in with a bass run that is thick and fuzzy, entering at acute angles from deep places. Marco's energy propels this improvised ditty into overdrive before coming to a quick and satisfying conclusion to wrap up the first set.

Those in attendance will recall that this song jolted the lighting into such a frenzy that the strobe light behind Marco became jammed, and that despite his efforts to create a groove to encapsulate the strobe (and thereafter to get the lighting technician to turn the effect off), Marco opted instead to end the set, saving his most creative crowd-incorporation for the second set. That clip (entitled "Crowd Control" for obvious reasons) is featured on the DVD and displays the talents of this trio in addition to master guitarist David Fiucynski.

Order the DVD:

from Marco's website
or at Amazon.com

It features some of the most respected players in New York, including Billy Martin (MMW), Brad Barr (The Slip), Kaki King, Joe Russo, Andrew Barr, Stanton Moore (Galactic), Marc Friedman, Skerik and many more...

Joel Dorn

It was two years ago today that Joel Dorn passed away. One of the best ever left here that day. But his spirit continues to vibrate. Here's to The Masked Announcer. We love ya!

Joel Dorn, a multiple Grammy Award-winning record producer who first made a name for himself while at Atlantic Records in the late 1960s and early '70s, died on Monday, December 17, from a heart attack, in New York City at the age of 65. One of the most prolific producers of his time, Dorn's discography stretches from the multi-platinum soul sounds of Roberta Flack to the black classical music of Rahsaan Roland Kirk. He helped introduce the world to Bette Midler's diva swing and the funky New Orleans' R&B of The Neville Brothers. His name can be found on the back of classic recordings by Les McCann and Eddie Harris, Mose Allison, Yusef Lateef, Leon Redbone, Peter Allen, Don Mclean, The Allman Brothers Band, David "Fathead" Newman, Donny Hathaway and Mongo Santamaria to name just a few. "It's impossible to pick a highlight," Dorn once said. "If one record was a highpoint because of great sales, there's another to match it for the incredible fun that went into making it and another that achieved its intended artistic vision."

From an early age, Joel Dorn knew he wanted to be in the music business, and not just anywhere in the music business; Dorn knew he wanted to work specifically for Atlantic Records. At 14-years old, he began correspondence with the label's Nesuhi Ertegun. "I'd send letters telling him who I thought they should have duet with Ray Charles, what talent they were missing out on, all sorts of critiques and suggestions," remembered Dorn.

In 1961, he officially began his career as a disc jockey at the pioneering Philadelphia jazz radio station WHAT-FM. "The DJ gig was a great way to get to know all the record companies, and get involved in the business, but I had my heart set on producing the entire time," remembered Dorn.

Nesuhi Ertegun, who'd now been corresponding with Dorn for six years, finally began to take those opinions seriously. "My show had become popular in the Philly market, and I think Atlantic realized that I was becoming instrumental in breaking records for them on a regional level,” figured Dorn. "Before long the letters turned into telephone calls and I eventually met Nesuhi."

As fate in 1963 would have it, Ertegun offered Dorn the chance to produce one record by an artist of his choice for Atlantic Jazz. Dorn chose Hubert Laws, a young flutist he had seen in Philly performing with Mongo Santamaria's band. The resulting album, The Laws of Jazz, would become the first of countless record production credits to follow.

By 1967, Dorn joined Atlantic Records full-time as Nesuhi Ertegun's assistant. He was given the opportunity to sign artists, produce their records and become intricately involved with the promotion and marketing. Rising quick through the ranks, Joel, along with Nesuhi and Ahmet Ertegun, Jerry Wexler, Arif Mardin and Tom Dowd became part of the most formidable record producing team of all time. Focusing primarily on jazz and R&B recordings, Joel developed a production style that was unique to the time period. "I brought pop techniques and pop sensibilities to jazz and R&B records,” recalls Dorn. "As a producer I had two gigantic influences: Lieber and Stoller and Phil Spector. To this day before I go in and make a record, I'll throw on 'Be My Baby' or a Coasters' record."

His work at Atlantic Records with Roberta Flack on "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" and "Killing Me Softly" won two consecutive Grammy Awards for "Record Of The Year." Additional Grammies were soon to follow including "Jazz Record Of The Year" for Keith Jarrett and Gary Burton. Joel also went on to sign Bette Midler and co-produce her debut album The Divine Miss M. "Some of the best times I've ever had involved recording artists who were completely unknown at the time like Roberta and Bette, and then watching them ascend to national prominence," Dorn exclaims. "It's a great feeling to put your faith in a young artist who you believe in and see them flourish."

In 1974, after accumulating ten Gold albums, five Platinum albums and seven Gold singles, Joel Dorn left Atlantic Records. He'd produce for a variety of labels and artists during this period, including albums by Leon Redbone, Lou Rawls, Don McClean, Peter Allen, Mink Deville and The Neville Brothers. He was awarded yet another Grammy for "Best Country and Western Instrumental" with Asleep At The Wheel's "One O'Clock Jump," and received two more Gold records for the Leon Redbone albums On the Track and Champagne Charlie.

In the mid-1980s, Dorn scaled back the hectic production schedule he'd maintained for the previous two decades. He took time off to travel the United States from ‘86 through ‘89, and in the process gathered hours upon hours of previously unreleased "live" recordings from many of his favorite artists. Four collections documenting Cannonball Adderley, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Les McCann and Eddie Harris were subsequently released on Joel's own label, Night Records. He later referred to these albums as "audio verite." It was through this short-lived venture that Dorn began to reinvent himself within the industry. He was soon asked to consult for the likes of Rhino, GRP and Columbia, which were in the process of updating and reissuing their catalogs on CD. Joel produced a 13-CD historical overview of the Atlantic Jazz years for Rhino. His production on the seven-CD John Coltrane box set entitled The Heavyweight Champion earned him an additional Grammy-nomination, while collections by Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Oscar Brown, Jr. cemented Dorn's reputation as a preeminent audio documentarian and reissue producer.

In 1995, the Smithsonian Institute added Joel Dorn's works and papers to its collection in honor of his accomplishments as a record producer. By the end of that year, Dorn decided it was time to take another shot at running his own record label. He subsequently formed 32 Records, which focused on reissuing albums from the classic Muse and Landmark jazz vaults, as well as select titles from Atlantic Records. In the four years spent with the label, Dorn reissued over 250 titles, and produced the critically acclaimed "Individually Twisted" by the Jazz Passengers with Deborah Harry. His biggest commercial success of this period came after developing the "Jazz for a Rainy Afternoon" compilation series, which went on to become one of the best selling jazz sets in the history of the genre. "I'm proud of what we accomplished with 32 Records in such a short period of time. There was the continued effort to get all of Rahsaan Roland Kirk's albums back in print. There was a terrific Judy Garland box set and personally fulfilling Clyde McPhatter set. For better or worse, the 'Jazz for…' series turned the industry on its ear, completely reshaping how jazz is marketed in this day and age," Dorn explained at the time. "I go into the record shops now and all these cats like Sonny Criss, Zoot Sims and Sonny Stitt are being reissued with intelligent price points and new packaging. To a certain extent, 32 tested the waters on that front and proved that these artists have an undying appeal. Nobody else was going there and now it's like every company in the world is looking for old jazz catalogs to reissue."

2007 marked Joel Dorn's 47th year in the record business. In a great loss to both American culture and music fans everywhere, it would be his last. Over the past decade, he'd produced albums by Jane Monheit, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, Leon Parker, Janis Siegel, and The Frank and Joe Show (featuring guitarist Frank Vignola and percussionist Joe Ascione). In 2003, Dorn helped create HYENA Records. The independent label forged an identity with an intriguing mix of new and archival recordings, including those by Bobby Darin, Thelonious Monk, Dr. John and Joe Williams.

At the time of his death, Dorn was completing a five CD box set for Rhino Handmade entitled Hommage a Nesuhi, serving as a tribute to his mentor Nesuhi Ertegun and their years together at Atlantic Records. He was also the voice of Sirius Satellite Radio's "Pure Jazz" channel and was producing a series of music infomercials for Time-Life.

"I don't know how to do anything else. It's like if I don't do this what am I going to do? Sit in the park? I love doing stuff with music, with records. I enjoy it," Dorn once said about being a producer. "I know that might not be the great spiritual answer, but I really love making records."

Dorn leaves behind three sons, Michael Dorn, who operates his own furniture store in Philadelphia, David Dorn, Sr. Vice President New Media for Rhino Records, and Adam Dorn (aka Mocean Worker), a musician, and his wife Faye Rosen.
